Man often becomes what he believes himself to be. If I keep on saying to myself that I cannot do a certain thing, it is possible that I may end by really becoming incapable of doing it. On the contrary, if I have the belief that I can do it, I shall surely acquire the capacity to do it even if I may not have it at the beginning. ― Mahatma Gandhi
A Mindset to Thrive
Don't be a quieter, and never, ever give up, on hope or yourself. Whether alone or with others, you are your own best hope, and maybe theirs too, don't count on anyone else. Take control, control your fears, shortcomings and ego, nature has no dog in this fight and only you will decide if you live or die. Below are the 4 flies in the mental ointment.
Surprise, is not always a good thing
As you decipher WTF, when you thought things are going well, then there not. Thought that you had a spare tire, more gas, a map, or your plane would stay in the air. "Surprise", your Normalcy bias just went out the window.
You may see strangers, friends and even family members that did not survive, or 100 miles of trails in front of you. The stories add up to hundreds or more per year, from hunters getting turned around in the woods to being stranded in a snow storm.
At that moment, you need to actually, physically MOVE to brake the lock-up going on in your mind. The Synonyms for this kind of surprise are disappointment and shock.
Confusion, don't ask yourself stupid questions.
You can, and possibly will get to wondering why. Why me? I'm not special, why them what did they do?, why didn't I have this or plan that?, why did God let this happen? blah blah blah. Let's start with the Big one, why did God allow this to happen? Let's take the humorous approach, because bad situations always need humor, he was busy and only had time to whisper in your ear, get more gas. Confusion is actually a symptom that makes you feel as if you cannot think clearly. You might feel disoriented and have a hard time focusing or making decisions. So stop asking yourself dumb questions.
Hesitation, Make the decision.
You will have time to grieve, bitch and complain later, but now isn't the time. Take stock of everything available the situation has to offer. gather supplies, water, snacks, everything you can use as tools, signaling devices, EVERYTHING that may be of use.
Plan: go or stay?
- Go time, how far? not too far for a rescue? Or are you just going to walk out? Hum, Down to water? or, up to check out where you are?
- Stay time, if it's late then you may want to stay for the night.
Don't get lost in the details, hesitation is a state of doubt or uncertainty, so gather the stuff, make a plan and do it.
Fear, Nothing to fear but fear itself.
Oh Yea, what about bears, snakes, poisonous spiders, cliffs, broken bones, "whatever". But right now we need the healthy fear that arises from taking stock of our present situation so that you can resolve to do something about it. Not that bears won't eat you, it's just using those unhealthy fears to motivate you to take action
